"May you live in interesting times."
Chinese curse
ROM TERRORISM TO GLOBAL WARMING, from Iraq to Afghanistan to Venezuela to Haiti, from recession to gay marriage, we are collectively living in interesting times indeed.
In fact, I can remember no epoch in history in which we as citizens of the United States and the world faced at one time so bewildering a constellation of issues. And it is those issues those cited above and many more that this section of the Nation and World subdomain exists to address and discuss. Here you will find three subsections:
- The Common Sense Series: A series of short "essaylets" introducing my opinions on a variety of subjects. Broad in subject matter but shallow in development, these make no attempt at in-depth analysis, serving rather as synopses of deeper examinations to follow.
- Essays: This is where I begin to delve into history and reasoned analysis of the issues that, to me at least, bear the greatest immediacy. Over time, these deeper studies will address most or all of the issues raised in the Common Sense Series. As of this writing, they concentrate chiefly on the occupation and continuing conflict in Iraq, for that is the most acute manifestation of the underlying national seethings that are now coming simultaneously to a boil.
- Quotes: Inspired both by the pressing matters of today and by those of yestermillennium, two pages of quotes round out the Issues section one from famous writers and historical figures ideally familiar to all, and the other consisting of my own pithier observations.
