Education and democracy

HE RIGHT HAS RECENTLY effected a change in America's educational expectations.

We ask no longer: "Teach me all that I need to know to be a citizen in a vibrant republic."

Instead we ask: "Teach me what I need to know to get a job that pays well."

This is, I think, another sign of decay; for a citizenry that buries itself in acquisition, and never learns or troubles itself to think critically about its leaders' actions, has begun to renounce democracy. And thus is set the stage for creeping totalitarianism.
